Born in Catania, Sicily, he was the son of director and screenwriter Giovanni Grimaldi. Aldo began his career as an assistant director on his father's films, gaining valuable industry experience. He made his directorial debut in 1967 with Nel sole, a film that achieved significant success and featured the popular singing duo Al Bano and Romina Power. Grimaldi continued to collaborate with the duo in subsequent films, including L'oro del mondo (1968) and Pensando a te (1969).
